The fundamental reason for a system of recording achievement is believed to be the encouragement and motivation of students to learn more effectively and to have greater control over their own learning by knowing what the goals are and how they can be achieved. The fact that we can also use information gathered during the assessment to inform interested parties such as parents and employers about the level of achievement and progress is also important, and facilitated by the system. A common structure throughout the organisation is desirable in order that all understand what is expected and students need only be familiar with one system.
